This 3-acre facility houses the
largest tropical reef aquarium in the
western hemisphere. Exhibits are
geared toward the residents of
Hawaii's ocean waters. As you walk
past the three dozen or so tanks and
countless exhibits, you'll slowly
descend from the "beach" to the
deepest part of the ocean, without
ever getting wet.
Start at the surge pool, where you'll
see shallow-water marine life like
spiny urchins and cauliflower coral,
then move on to the reef tanks, turtle
pool, "touch" pool (with starfish and
urchins), and eagle-ray pool (with
stingrays) before reaching the star of
the show: the 54 foot-long,
750,000-gallon main tank featuring
tiger, gray, and white-tip sharks,
surgeon fish, trigger fish, and
numerous other tropicals. The most
phenomenal thing about this tank is
that the walkway goes right through
it--so you'll be surrounded on three
sides by marine creatures. A very cool
place, and well worth the time.
The center is located in Maalaea
harbor Village, at the triangle
between Honoapiilani Hwy, and Maalaea
Road. Maui Ocean Center
In Hawaii, geographic isolation has
created an ecosystem like no other
place on earth. Nearly 30% of Hawaii's
fish are found nowhere else in the
world.
Maui Ocean Center is the perfect place
to learn about this unique
environment, and get to know the
animals you'll see when snorkeling or
diving.
Allow a minimum of two hours to visit
the Maui Ocean Center which offers
tours, films, and classes on their
exhibits.
The center has a fun gift shop and
ocean view restaurant plus kiosk for
fast food and snacks. Open daily 9am -
5pm.
